Hybrid cloud becomes useful when workload placement can change without forcing every application team to redesign its systems at the same time. Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) on Microsoft Azure offers one path for organizations that want to extend their Nutanix environment into the public cloud.
What runs on Azure bare metal?
NC2 on Azure brings Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure software to supported Azure bare-metal instances. This supports a consistent Nutanix operating model across on-premises infrastructure and Azure. Nutanix describes application migration, cloud disaster recovery, and data-center extension as core use cases, with options to connect workloads to native Azure services. The architectural distinction matters: this is a Nutanix environment running on dedicated cloud infrastructure. It is not the same deployment model as moving each workload into an individual Azure-native virtual machine or managed service.
Three situations to evaluate
A data-center exit. A business facing a lease deadline may want to move supported applications first and modernize them in later phases. The evaluation should prove application compatibility, migration tooling, and operational readiness before a production cutover.
An additional recovery location. A team may consider Azure as part of its recovery design. The business must still define acceptable recovery time and data loss, select the necessary protection approach, and rehearse both failover and return to normal operations.
A capacity extension. An organization with temporary or regional demand may examine cloud capacity as an alternative to another hardware purchase. Build the cost model around the capacity that must remain active, as well as the capacity that can be reduced.
These are planning scenarios rather than promises of a particular migration duration, recovery time, or saving.
Plan the connections before the move
Infrastructure familiarity does not remove network and identity dependencies. Document application traffic, name resolution, directory services, security controls, and connections to systems that remain on premises. Test latency-sensitive dependencies with representative traffic.
Agree on which team owns the Nutanix environment, which team manages Azure connectivity and governance, and how support incidents move between them. A clear responsibility matrix is especially useful during the period when applications span two locations.
Check the economics and constraints
A useful business case includes bare-metal capacity, software entitlement, connectivity, data transfer, backup, support, and any overlapping on-premises costs during migration. Verify current supported regions, node types, licensing terms, and capacity availability for the intended deployment.
Compare at least two workload-placement options. Some applications may benefit from continuity on Nutanix, while others may justify migration to a managed cloud service. Decide using application requirements and operating cost rather than a single policy for every workload.
Start with an application-led pilot
Select a representative application, test migration and rollback, and validate recovery. Only then expand the migration wave.
