EDR and Managed SOC: Who Responds When Your Endpoint Raises an Alert?

Endpoint detection and response (EDR) provides endpoint visibility and response capabilities; a managed security operations centre (SOC) provides people and processes to investigate and coordinate action. The buying question is who owns an alert from detection through containment and recovery.

For a growing business with a small IT team, buying another security tool may leave the same operational gap: alerts arrive after hours, but nobody is clearly responsible for acting.

Separate product coverage from response coverage

Document devices, operating systems, servers and remote users. Check compatibility and product support before choosing a platform. Record assets that cannot run the required agent.

Then define service coverage. Who watches alerts? Which hours apply? Who validates a suspicious event? What happens if the customer contact cannot be reached?

An installed agent does not prove that a device is healthy, reporting or included in a managed service. Ask for a coverage report with an owner for exceptions.

Map a complete alert workflow

Use a realistic tabletop scenario: a finance laptop generates a suspicious activity alert late on a Friday.

  • Identify who receives and triages the alert.

  • Define what evidence is reviewed and how severity is assigned.

  • Agree who may isolate the device or disable an account.

  • Set business notification and escalation responsibilities.

  • Assign recovery, validation and follow-up actions.
  • Containment decisions can disrupt legitimate work. Pre-agree authority, exceptions and escalation for critical devices. Keep incident-response contacts current.

    Compare managed service proposals

Ask suppliers to explain monitoring hours, supported telemetry, investigation scope, escalation targets and reporting. Confirm whether the scope includes only endpoint alerts or also identity, email, network and cloud signals.

Clarify what is outside the agreement. Forensic investigation, recovery engineering, on-site work and legal support may require separate arrangements. The term “managed detection” does not establish that every response task is included.

Request evidence of agent-health monitoring, detection tuning, secure administrative access and escalation testing. A demonstration should cover an operational workflow as well as the product dashboard.

Keep recovery and prevention in scope

Endpoint tooling should sit alongside account security, patching, access management, tested backups and an incident plan. No single control guarantees that ransomware or another incident will be prevented.

CISA's ransomware guidance provides a broader prevention and response checklist. Use it to structure discussions across IT and business owners rather than treating endpoint protection as the complete programme.

Review lessons after an incident or exercise: what was detected, how quickly decisions were made, what blocked containment and which actions remain open.

    Frequently asked questions

Is EDR the same as a managed SOC?

No. EDR is a technology category. A SOC is an operating function that can use endpoint and other security information. Service boundaries vary.

Does buying EDR include 24/7 human response?

Only if the purchased service explicitly includes that coverage. Check licensing and service terms separately.

Should our internal IT team stay involved?

Yes. Business context, change approvals, application recovery and communication usually require customer participation.
