Azure VMware Solution (AVS): Move VMware Workloads Without Rebuilding

A data-center exit can create a difficult choice for organizations with a large VMware estate: move quickly or redesign applications for the cloud. Azure VMware Solution (AVS) provides an option to separate those decisions, allowing supported VMware workloads to move to Azure while modernization proceeds at a different pace.

What AVS provides

AVS runs VMware environments on dedicated infrastructure in Azure data centers. Microsoft operates and supports the underlying service, while organizations can continue using a familiar VMware operating model for their workloads. Applications can also be connected to Azure services as part of a broader modernization plan. Microsoft explains this approach in its Azure VMware Solution adoption overview.

“Without rebuilding” means that suitable applications may avoid an immediate architectural rewrite. It does not remove the need to assess compatibility, plan networking, test migration, or prepare a cutover and rollback procedure.

Where AVS can fit

A business with a time-bound data-center exit might evaluate AVS as a destination for supported virtual machines. Another organization may consider it while extending its VMware environment into Azure or planning a phased modernization program.

The important question is whether retaining the VMware operating model serves the application and business requirements. Compare that option with moving to Azure-native infrastructure or redesigning selected services. The answer can differ across the same portfolio.

Start with application dependencies

A virtual machine rarely works in isolation. Map its directory services, databases, file shares, DNS, security appliances, backup tools, and external integrations. Identify which dependencies migrate together and which remain elsewhere.

Test the proposed connectivity with realistic traffic. A successful virtual-machine move is not a successful business migration if users experience unacceptable latency or an essential integration stops working.

Build a migration acceptance checklist

  • Compatibility: Validate workload and tooling support for the proposed environment.

  • Capacity: Size the target using measured utilization, growth, and resilience requirements.

  • Connectivity: Confirm routing, name resolution, access controls, and dependent services.

  • Protection: Test backup and restore against agreed recovery objectives.

  • Cutover: Define ownership, business validation, communications, and rollback triggers.

  • Operations: Update monitoring, support procedures, and escalation paths.
  • A pilot should include a representative application and its dependencies, not only an isolated test VM. Capture what the support team needs to operate it after the migration specialists leave.

    Review the full commercial picture

    Evaluate current service availability, host capacity, VMware licensing requirements, software entitlements, connectivity, backup, and support terms with the relevant providers. Include temporary overlap with the source environment in the migration budget.

    Do not assume that an existing license automatically covers a future deployment or that every benefit applies to every workload. Validate the actual proposal and document its assumptions.

    Keep modernization intentional

    Once workloads are stable, review which applications should remain on AVS and which might benefit from managed services or redesign. Give that roadmap an owner and business milestones so migration creates room for improvement.
